Sociatopia - Helping you break free from Social Anxiety
Welcome to Sociatopia! 👋
Hi! I'm Jack, founder of Sociatopia. I struggled with social anxiety for more than a decade, since middle school all the way through to my early career!
Through my years with social anxiety, I often overwhelmed in social situations. I got nervous just thinking about making phone calls, and even simple tasks like ordering food at a restaurant would make my heart race. There was once I was chatting with a friend on Skype, and he pulled me into a group voice call with about four other people, and I absolutely panicked. Looking back he was probably trying to help me with my social problems by trying to get me more involved with the friend group, but for me the unexpected social pressure sent me into panic mode. I hurriedly typed that I had internet problems and immediately fled the call.
Despite my challenges, my social anxiety improved steadily over the years. Today, while I still experience occasional nervousness (especially in group settings), I feel significantly less anxious than before. I didn't change my personality—I'm still introverted and often quiet in social settings. Instead, I learned to accept who I am, and now I want to help others through their own journey of self-acceptance.
In this blog I'll briefly talk about what social anxiety is, how I overcame most of my social anxiety, and how Sociatopia can help. Over the next few months I will be writing more blogs, sharing more details of how I overcame my social anxiety, developing more features of Sociatopia, and even making videos on social media. Stay tuned!
What is social anxiety?
Social anxiety isn't just "Being very shy" or "Afraid of talking to people". In fact, some people with social anxiety are extroverts (Guy-Evans, 2023)!
Social anxiety is an intense, persistent fear of being watched, judged, or criticized in social situations. People with social anxiety can have the following symptoms (Social anxiety disorder (social phobia), 2021):
- Fear of meeting new people
- Difficulties starting or maintaining conversations
- Struggling to make eye contact
- Intense worry about embarrassing oneself
- Physical symptoms like sweating, trembling, or rapid heartbeat
Usually when people experience social anxiety, they tend to evade social situations as much as possible. I have done that many times through my life. Although it can be effective in the short term, in most cases it only worsens the symptoms in the long term.
I am a strong believer that the best way to conquer a fear is to face it, step by step. Even small steps count, such as just smiling at a stranger walking by. Something that helped me personally was walking a lot. Surprisingly, just going on a lot of hikes in the park and walks along the beach made me feel much anxious in my future social interactions with other people. That's why I developed Sociatopia, to provide a gentle, step-by-step approach to facing social anxiety.
